Ooooopssss! Where is my next destination??? "The City of Gentle People"Brief History:![]() According to a popular legend,"Dumaguete" was coined from the Visayan word "daggit" which means "to snatch". The legend says that because of the frequent marauding attacks of the Muslim pirates on the coastal town, and the power to attract and keep her visitors for good, hence, the word "dumaguet", meaning "to swoop," was christened to the village of Dumaguete. However, Diego Lopez Povedano in 1572, indicated the place as "Dananguet." But in 1734,Jesuit cartographer, Murillo Velarde referred to it, using its present name, as Dumaguete. In 1890, the island-province of Negros was divided into two politico-military provinces,Occidental and Oriental. As earlier constituted,in 1898,Dumaguete was included in Negros Oriental. After the Philippine-American War, on May 1,1901,a civil government was established by the Americans in the Province of Negros Oriental, including Dumaguete. When World War II broke out, the city was occupied by the Japanese Imperial Forces on May 26,1942. It was liberated on April 26,1945 by the combined forces of the U.S. Army and the Filipino guerrillas. On June 15, 1948 or three years later, Republic Act No. 327,created the City of Dumaguete. Later,on June 21,1969, Republic Act No. 5797 was enacted, otherwise known as the Revised Charter of Dumaguete City. Dumaguete Proper!![]() Dumaguete airport is just a small one. I have read a blog that it is just easy to commute from the airport to the city/downtown. You just need to take a cab going to the city and then tricycle to your hotel. When you step out of the airport, you need to turn right and walk straight 'til you reach the highway. There are a lot of tricycle drivers outside waiting. You may opt to hire them as well for P150. There was a naughty driver who followed me as I walked towards the arc. From P150, he made it P100, then finally P50. I told him that it is still cheaper to ride the cab and tricycle in the city. Aside from that I need to take a picture of the arc. After that conversation he stopped following me. After taking this picture, the tricycle appeared again and offered me once again. I don't know what went inside my mind and I automatically get inside the tricycle even thought there were two passengers already. He dropped me in front of the hotel where I booked. I remember, when he asked me about my hotel, he instantly reacted AY! ANG PANGET DUN, MATAGAL NA YUN! (it's not good to stay there. It's already old and the hotel is not nice). I told him, but I already booked there and it is already paid so I cannot look for another one. Even thought there were two passengers inside, he still asked me to pay him P50. I did not argue with him anymore. HAROLD'S MANSION
Day 1: Silliman University TripGood thing Silliman University is just walking distance (just for me only). I think it took me 5-10 minutes. With the help of the security guard, I was able to locate the Anthropology museum ans Silliman university church.
Review: The museum has a good collection of artifacts. I thought it only came from the province itself but actually they got it from different places. I saw some stuffs related to sorcery and medicinal plants that they got from Siquijor. I had a very meaningful conversation with the museum keeper who happens to be an Anthropology professor of Silliman. She shared a lot of things to me and I was so amazed with it. I just hope they will get more collections and for them to get support from the local and national government. After the museum tour, I went to the Silliman church. At 12:00 Noon, I decided to go back to Harolds, checked in and rested for 2 hours. Marine MuseumFrom Harolds, Marine museum is just 5 minutes away. The location is near the airport and beach. The fare was just P10, but I made it P20 because I found the driver so nice and accommodating. MARINE MUSEUM: Entrance Fee: P10 Review: I like it but the place should be properly maintained. I was the only one who visited the museum during that time. A group of students came when I was about to leave. There's also a crocodile farm at the back. I also checked the beach near the marine museum. There was no tricycle in the place so I decided to walk a far distance 'til I saw one. I asked the driver to drop me at Silliman. After that, it's time to explore the Rizal boulevard. Rizal BoulevardIt's 200% better than Manila bay. I really found this place very relaxing. Since I love walking, I had a nice time exploring the place. The Acacia trees in the place are really of great help in adding beauty to the place. Using the map application of my phone, I discovered that QUEZON PARK is just near. So i follow the map and was able to reach the place. Near the park, some of the important landmarks are also present. Campanario de Dumaguete Dumaguete Cathedral Church Snack Time!I love street foods! DGTE has this unique place in Rizal blvd. that offers street foods. I ordered for tempura (which is just a long kikiam), squid balls and softdrink. Day 2: APO Island TourHarold's mansion is offering tours to different tourist spots. It is cheaper especially if you are alone like me or if you are just a small group. However, it doesn't mean that they always have a tour. They must be able to form a big group first wherein the members agree with the date before pushing through the tour. You just need to call them or go to their front office and see the papers posted on the desk. You need to write your name and contact number if you wish to join the tour. For Apo tour, I think there must be at least 10 snorkelers and 4 divers. I paid P1000 for that, inclusive of food for lunch and snacks, transportation, boat and equipment. THUMBS UP FOR THIS VERY BEAUTIFUL ISLAND! With the use of my underwater camera. I never thought that the pictures would be as clear as this. During my first two dives/snorkels, I had a hard time because the goggles was loose. I got tired easily and was having a hard time breathing. It's been a while since I snorkeled. Good thing, the tour guide replaced my goggles, a tighter one. So I really enjoyed my last snorkel. I think, I snorkeled for one hour. I was eager to find a turtle in its natural habitat. Sadly, I failed though we saw 3 when we were still on the boat. The tour started from 6:00 AM until 5:00 PM. I was the only Filipino in the group. After the tour, I felt pain on my back, why? Because I got sun burn! My back was really aching. Day 3: Casororo Falls TourBefore leaving the city, the itinerary for the day was to visit Casororo falls in Valencia, a nearby town. I was lucky also because a travel buddy came from Cebu. It means that it'll be fun and CHEAPER since we'll share on the expenses. At 9:00 AM I already checked out from the hotel but left my bags in the counter. I planned to just get it when I come back. Supposedly, we will just commute going to Valencia, then ride a tricycle that will bring us to the location but I met a driver outside the hotel and offered his service. For P600, no more worries, he will bring us to the exact location and wait for us and it will be faster. I grabbed the offer since there were two of us who will pay. If you are not in a hurry, you may opt to just commute, it's cheaper! It took us 45 minutes to reach the place. When you reach the place, you need to trek. When we visited the place, the road was being constructed; lucky for the future tourists! The caretaker of the falls is an old lady who has a store near the entrance. It's so funny that we were escorted by her dogs. We paid P20 for the entrance fee. Be careful in going down, there are 350 steps.
Finally, meet Casororo falls! There were some people who visited the place that day as well. But they refused to stay long. The weather during that day was not that good; it's cloudy and drizzling. We opted to stay long, I told my buddy to cherish the moment since we had hard time trekking. I think we stayed for an hour. Suddenly, we remembered the reminder given to us not to stay in the falls/place if it is raining. So when we felt that it was drizzling again, we instantly started trekking back (we don't want to die). When we reached the foot of the ladder/stair (is this the term for that?) we told ourselves "FINALLY!" Later on, we realized that it was the greatest challenge at all, to CLIMB UP! Since we got too tired of climbing up, we rested at the small nipa hut of the caretaker. There, she told us lots of stories. We found out that the place got devastated because of the recent typhoon. She also confirmed that there were foreigners who died in the place that's why they don't allow tourists to swim in the falls (CREEPY!) After the Casororo falls tour, I went back to Harold's mansion, got my bags and proceeded to the ferry terminal just near Rizal boulevard to catch the 2:30PM boat ride bound for Siquijor. Unfortunately, there's none so we waited for the 4:00 PM schedule. Leaving DGTE with a smile!Another ADVENTURE awaits...............EXPENSES:DAY 1 Taxi from LP to NAIA3 210 Accommodation 1600 Tryc from Airport to Harolds 50 Entrance (Anthropology Museum) 40 Lunch (Mang Jo's Inasal) 160 Water, Chips 104 Try to Marine Museum 20 Entrance fee 10 Tryc back to Silliman 9 Snacks 45 Dinner 100 TOTAL 2348 DAY 2 Apo tour 1000 Dinner 205 Medicine 30 TOTAL 1505 DAY 3 Tryc to Casororo P600 300 Snack 20 Lunch 150 Tryc to the port 20 TOTAL 490 GRAND TOTAL P4,343 Don't hesitate to leave a comment/reaction/question!
